Preserving the natural environment of the Taconic Plateau.

The Taconic Plateau Foundation’s mission is to protect unique ecological areas for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. Our immediate focus is a pristine 175 acre parcel along the Connecticut border in the Town of North East, The Taconic Plateau Foundation (TPF) Preserve. TPF provides access for collaborative educational and research opportunities, while promoting environmental conservation and wildlife stewardship.

Conserve

The Southern Taconic Range is home to over 150 rare and endangered species. Our unique corner of the Northeast is under increasing development pressures that threaten to degrade this precious habitat. TPF has made it a priority to protect the diversity and ecology of the plants, animals and natural communities that currently exist in the Taconic Plateau area and to promote wildlife management on our lands.

Access

We welcome schools, ecological and scientific organizations, birding clubs, conservation and public service groups, as well as other interested parties, to access and explore the plateau in ways consistent with our mission.

Deer hunting is by application and must support ecological balance and species management.

Please fill out a request form and include your suggestions and/or requests for field trips, guided hikes, speakers, workshops or hunting access.

Guided walks and educational forums are posted in News & Updates.

Study

The land stewarded by TPF offers access to the Taconic Plateau for:

  • Environmental research

  • Educational programs

  • Public recreational use compatible with our mission

To care for the TPF Preserve and understand how to best encourage public activities, we commissioned a 2025 Biodiversity Study by Hudsonia, a top environmental research institute. See descriptions of the Preserve’s geological complexity, its 19 significant habitats and the best practices for its stewardship in the full report posted in News & Updates.
